WHEN YOU NEED REMOTE ACCESS

Use Remote Access to access any of the following.

DCRI INTRANET

The DCRI Intranet and its resources require you to be logged on to the network prior to accessing them (otherwise, either a not found error appears or you are redirected to the public-facing dcri.org site). To access a page or file on the DCRI Intranet from a remote location, you must use either Cisco AnyConnect or iDCRI/Citrix.

INTERNAL WEB APPLICATIONS

Some web-based applications, such as Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Time Card or the Duke LMS (Learning Management System), require you to use Remote Access to open them from a remote location. Otherwise, your browser generates a page not found error.

SECURE SHAREPOINT SITES

You need remote access capabilities to reach internal SharePoint site collections, such as Team, Collaboration, or TMF (Trial Master File) sites that are behind the DCRI firewall.

A VIRTUAL MACHINE OR YOUR DCRI-ISSUED WINDOWS COMPUTER

You must use Cisco AnyConnect or or iDCRI/Citrix (if you have Remote Desktop Connection in iDCRI) to remotely access a Windows Virtual Machine (VM) or the Desktop of your DCRI-issued Windows computer and operate it as if you were sitting at your desk.

To access the Desktop of your work computer, be certain before you leave work that you log off the DCRI computer, but leave it powered on and connected to the wired DCRI network.

NETWORK DRIVES

You must use Remote Access to reach a DCRI network drive from a remote location. For security, the folders on network drives are restricted to specified groups or team members (your NetID determines which folders, subfolders, and files you can access). Contact the DCRI Service Desk if you are denied access to a destination required for your work.

Drive Letter What is stored on this drive? What type of access do I have? Can I save files to this drive? Are files backed up?
U: Your home directory on the DCRI network Restricted to you Yes Yes
K: Cross-team work folders Restricted to specified group or team members Yes, if given access. Files are shared and accessed by group or team members Yes
T: Team production folders Yes
C: Files on the hard drive of your DCRI-issued desktop computer Restricted to you Yes No*

* Warning! Since the DCRI Service Desk does not have a way to back up or restore files saved to any C: drive, always use network drives to store your work-related files.

APPLICATIONS UNAVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL COMPUTER

If you need to use one or more commonly used applications at the DCRI that you do not have installed on your local computer, you can use iDCRI/Citrix to access them. Also, employees/contractors can use Cisco AnyConnect to open applications installed on their DCRI-owned Windows computer at work.

A few DCRI web-based applications, such as InForm, require the Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer (IE) browser. Some other web resources—such as SharePoint websites (particularly if you are a Site Owner)—work best with IE. If you do not have IE on your personal computer, you can either use iDCRI/Citrix to open Internet Explorer, or use Cisco AnyConnect to open the IE browser installed on your DCRI computer at work.
