WHEN YOU NEED REMOTE ACCESS

Use Remote Access to access any of the following.

DCRI INTRANET

The DCRI Intranet and its resources require you to be logged on to the network prior to accessing them (otherwise, either a not found error appears or you are redirected to the public-facing dcri.org site). To access a page or file on the DCRI Intranet from a remote location, you must use either CIsco AnyConnect or Citrix.

INTERNAL WEB APPLICATIONS

Some web-based applications, such as Enterprise Project Management (EPM) Time Card or the Duke LMS (Learning Management System), require you to use Remote Access to open them from a remote location. Otherwise, your browser generates a page not found error.

SECURE SHAREPOINT SITES

You need remote access capabilities to reach internal SharePoint site collections, such as Team, Collaboration, or TMF (Trial Master File) sites that are behind the DCRI firewall.

NETWORK DRIVES

From a remote location, you must use Remote Access to reach a DCRI network drive. For security, the folders on network drives are restricted to specified groups or team members (your NetID determines which folders, subfolders, and files you can access). Contact the DCRI Service Desk if you are denied access to a destination required for your work.

Drive Letter What is stored on this drive? What type of access do I have? Can I save files to this drive? Are files backed up?
U: Your home directory on the DCRI network Restricted to you Yes Yes
K:, P:, or T: Shared public folders for DCRI employees/contractors Restricted to specified group or team members Yes, if given access. Files are shared and accessed by group or team members. Yes
C: Files on the hard drive of your DCRI laptop Restricted to you Yes No*

* Warning! Since the DCRI Service Desk does not have a way to back up or restore any files saved to your laptop's C: drive, always use network drives to store your work-related files.

A VIRTUAL MACHINE OR YOUR DCRI-ISSUED WINDOWS COMPUTER AT WORK

(If applicable) If you are traveling or at home, you can access a Windows Virtual Machine (VM) or (rare:) the Desktop of your DCRI-issued Windows computer powered on at work. You can then access its hard drive, applications, and DCRI network resources as if you are seated right at your desk at the DCRI.

WINDOWS INTERNET EXPLORER

A few DCRI web-based applications (such as InForm) require the Windows Internet Explorer (IE) browser. Some other web applications—such as SharePoint websites (particularly if you are a Site Owner)work best with IE. If you removed IE from your DCRI laptop, you can use Citrix to start up release 11 of Internet Explorer.
