WHEN YOU DO NOT NEED REMOTE ACCESS

There are a number of DCRI/Duke resources that do not require a DCRIconnect application.

If you need Remote Access to open certain applications you do not have installed on your computer, try installing the Self-Service application so you can download certain commonly used applications at no charge. (The particular applications available to you varies with your functional group affiliation and job function.)

ACCESSING YOUR EMAIL ON THE WEB

You do not have to use Remote Access to open your DCRI/Duke email. Instead, you
can access your Outlook account from your browser using the Duke Office 365 web application by clicking the Office 365 option on the DCRIconnect portal page or by
going directly to mail.duke.edu.

For more information, refer to resources on the Microsoft Outlook and Office 365 Learning Center (you must be logged on to the DCRI network) and to Microsoft training videos at help.outlook.com/en-us/140/gg605090.aspx.

ACCESSING SOME WEB APPS

You can reach some web applications, such as Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS), directly from your browser
without opening the DCRIconnect portal page. (Of course, for security, you must enter a valid NetID and password to use these web apps.)

ACCESSING SOME WEBSITES

There are some DCRI-related websites that are intended for public access (such as DCRI.org and the CTMS Learning Center) and some websites that are accessible to the public but require a valid NetID and password to open specific resources (such as the Duke Occupational and Environmental Safety Office [OESO] website). You do not have to
open a remote access application for these types of URLs.

Tip: Try connecting to a website or web application directly to determine if Remote Access is necessary.

MACBOOK: USING A WIRELESS NETWORK IN A DCRI FACILITY

DCRI supports two Duke Health Wi-Fi networks. If your OS X computer is a MacBook and you have the device with you in a DCRI/DUHS facility, you can connect it to:

  • Clubs: A secure internal wireless network with full access to DCRI/DUHS network resources. A valid NetID and password are required to log on to this network. With this connection, Remote Access is unnecesary to access network resources.
  • Guest: An open wireless network available to visitors for Internet access only (no access to the DCRI Intranet or network drives). There is no authorization, but you must agree to appropriate use guidelines.

Important! Conduct all routine DCRI business on the Clubs network.

MACBOOK: USING THE WIRED NETWORK IN A DCRI FACILITY

Medium- to large-sized conference rooms thoughout the DCRI offer Ethernet connectivity so you can plug your MacBook directly into the high-speed wired network. With this connection, remote access is unncessary to access network resources.
